Introduction to the O*NET

The 1,000 Jobs Described in the Occupational Information Network

This section of CareerOINK is a good place to explore career, job, and learning options. The O*NET is the most comprehensive source of current job data available. In CareerOINK, O*NET includes descriptions for about 1,000 jobs from a database maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor. Called the Occupational Information Network (or "O*NET"), it includes measures on more than 400 characteristics for each job along with other information.

Because it has so much information, the O*NET is not available in printed form. Reading all the data for even one job would be both hard to understand and boring. It is an example of too much of a good thing.

CareerOINK has solved this problem by presenting you with a relatively short, relatively interesting, and very useful description for each O*NET job. We use descriptions developed for the book O*NET Dictionary of Occupational Titles. Published by JIST, this book is based on extensive database work that results in brief, readable, and information-packed job descriptions based on the most recent O*NET data, version 3. Very nice, and used with permission.

If you need more detailed information about the O*NET and what you will find in a sample description, click on "More Info" below. If you'd like tips on using the O*NET, click on "Put the O*NET to Work for You".

  2. From the list of O*NET job titles, click on one that interests you, and CareerOINK will take you directly to the description for that job. Easy.

If you want to, you can then click on any of the related (and often more specific) job titles CareerOINK lists after the O*NET job description.
