Introduction to the Occupational Outlook Handbook

The 270 Jobs Described in the Occupational Outlook Handbook

This is a good place in CareerOINK to start if you want to explore career, job, or learning options. The reason is that this section starts with a manageable number of jobs. But these 270 jobs are major ones, employing more than 90% of the workforce. The job descriptions come from the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). The OOH is updated every two years by the U.S. Department of Labor and is considered by many to be the most helpful of all career references.

If you need more detailed information about the OOH and what you will find in a sample description, click on "More Info" below. If you'd like tips on using the OOH, click on "Put the OOH to Work for You".

Complex Directions to Use the OOH Part of CareerOINK

  1. Click your mouse on the OOH book cover below. Then, begin narrowing your search by clicking on groups that interest you in each list displayed, until you get a list of job titles. In most cases, there will be 3 levels of groups, starting with Occupational Clusters, then related subgroups. Just keep clicking on things that interest you until you get to a list of job titles.
  2. From that list, click on a job title that interests you, and CareerOINK will take you directly to the description for that job. Easy.

If you want to, you can then click on any of the related (and often more specific) O*NET job titles listed after the OOH description. Doing this will take you to the related O*NET job descriptions.

Click the book cover below to begin using the OOH section of CareerOINK.
